Arequipa Pottery

Pottery from the Arequipa Sanitorium in Marin County, California, (1911-1918) was produced by women undergoing treatment for tuberculosis. The pottery was created within the context of shifting attitude towards health and illness, changing roles of women and Arts & Crafts philosophy.

Landmark Arequipa Pottery Exhibitiom
Opens at Oakland Museum November 11, 2000

The biggest showing of Arequipa Pottery since the Panama-Pacific Expo in 1915 opens this month at the Oakland Museum of California, for a run through April 29, 2001. A series of public programs will complement the exhibition, which includes tiles from Casa Dorinda, a 65 room Spanish Colonial mansiion near Santa Barbara. All major designs and pottery techniqes used by the legendary Marin County center of the Arts & Crafts Movement are on veiw, and a 120 page catalog is available, coauthored by the curator, Suzanna Baizerman, Arequipa Scholar Lynn Downey, and California Collage of Arts & Crafts instructor John Toki. Kenneth Trapp, Renwick Gallery curator at the Smithsonian, and author of the definitive catalog on the Movement in California (written while he served at the Oakland Museum), returns for an opening lecture, "California Arts & Crafts Era Pottery," Sat., November 11, 2pm.
Given the size of the exhibit, this is a rare opportunity to study the work produced by and under the direction of Arequipa's now legendary ceramicists, Fredrick Hurten Rhead, Albert Solon, and Fred Wilde.
